Competency Assessment in the Training of Surgeons

Date: Thursday 7th June
Commencing: 12.00 pm
Venue: Jean Falkner Lecture Theatre, Ground Floor, Dental Hospital, 720 Swanston Street

Presented by: Associate Professor Andrew Smith

School of Dental Science, University of Melbourne

Dental education has had a long history of simulation. At the most simplistic level it has the advantage that students can practice on extracted teeth.

There have been advances but most students still practice upon their patients!

A/Professor Smith will show how students are taught now and also explain how the MUVES project will be a major advance in surgical simulation.

In addition, as the chair of the Board of Studies in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, A/Professor Smith will show how movements are underway to implement competency based assessment as part of the training process.
