Simulation in Early Military Pilot Training

This seminar will present the findings of a study on the appropriate use of simulation and synthetic training environments in early pilot training for the Australian Defence Force. The work seeks to provide a principled approach to understanding the nature of different types of simulators and their place in training compared to the use of traditional training devices especially training aircraft. The seminar will present the approach and methods used to understand the training system, its context and the learner and learning process. Key concepts include a consideration of novice-expert differences, the role of instructors, organisational issues and the development of a cognitive science model of learning which can be mapped onto existing instructional and curriculum development practice. Key findings from the research will be presented along with a description of further work being undertaken.
